Background & Objective: Teaching professionalism is one of the foundations of professional development for medical students. Although there are several definitions of professionalism, there is no precise definition of professionalism in medical education. This study aimed to explain the concept of professionalism in medical education.
Materials & Methods: This study was performed using Rodgers’ evolutionary concept analysis method. Literature reviews were done in PubMed, Scopus, Scientific Information Database, and Magiran databases using the keywords including “Professionalism”, “Professional Ethics”, and “Medical Education”.
Results: In the initial search, of 2602 articles retrieved, 56 articles were finally analyzed. The resulting 573 codes were divided into three categories of attributes, antecedent, and consequences. The attributes of professionalism in medical education were identified in two categories: the emergence of the professional role models and the institutionalization of the culture of professionalism in education. The manner and competency of professors and university policy in achieving professionalism were determined as an antecedent, and the consequences related to health stakeholders were determined as the consequences of professionalism in medical education.
Conclusion: According to this study, professionalism in medical education is the institutionalization of the culture of professionalism and the emergence of professional role models in the educational environment of medical sciences to train professional students such that to provide the best quality services and ensure the health of society. If the antecedents of professionalism are available in the university, professionalism will be institutionalized in medical education. Consequently, professionalism will have positive effects on medical education and the health system.
