The aim of this study was to determine the viewpoints of midwives employed in Zanjan University of Medical Science towards continuing education programs.

Material and Methods: In this analytical-descriptive study, the number of samples based on the census was 43.Data gathering tool was a series of multiple choice questions about demographic data, priorities and educational needs which were designed based on Likert Scale and the aim of participation in this courses. Also some problems and suggestions were in the form of open questions that were filled and collected by our colleagues in one phase. Descriptive statistics and Spss14 software were utilized for analyzing information.

Results: 35 out of 43 midwives who were working in the centers, participated in this research. Their average age was 34.3±4.1 their mean years of service was 124 month the average number of courses they had taken part was 16 and the duration of these courses was about 134 hours. More than 75% of them had attended in different retraining courses just inside the Zanjan province. 61.7% of them took part in unrelated training courses with different reasons such as interest and gaining job credits, 79.4% for improving their educational levels, 26.4% for reviewing lessons and 14% for gaining job credits. Most of their educational needs were new drugs and treatment methods in midwifery, new techniques and equipment of health care in topology and emergency centers. Major problems with these courses were inefficient proficiency of professors. There were many suggestions for holding regular and frequent courses in intensive form similar to medical courses.

Abstract

Background and objective: Scientific research in every country is the most important factor of growth and prosperity. This study was conducted to find out students' views about research barriers at SSUMS. Materials and Methods: This cross- sectional study was conducted using 384 students who were selected by multistage random sampling. Data collection tool was a valid and reliable questionnaire with 56 questions in 4 parts: 22 demographic and background questions, 15 items about personal barriers in research (α=0.73) with a 75-15 score range and 19 items in organizational barriers studies (α=0.77) with a 95-19 score range. It was completed in self report. Data was analyzed by SPSS-18 using descriptive statistics and analytical tests such as Pearson correlation, ANOVA, independent T-test and linear regression ( p=0.05). Results: Mean of personal barriers was 50.96±8.58 (67.94% of the full score), and that of organizational barriers 65.18±11.20 (68.61% of the full score). Personal perceived barriers were more in women (P=0.022). Personal barriers were higher in participants who did not participate in research workshops (P=0.033). Lack of adequate awareness of the principles and statistical methods and lack of adequate motivation had greater weight. Conclusion: Because of high interest of the students in research activities and due to their ability in this regard, university authorities should pay more attention to this issue.

Abstract

Background and Objective: The teacher is the most important factor in achieving educational goals in any academic institution. Awareness of student opinions about the characteristics of a good teacher can help us to determine the principles of evaluation of teaching and learning activities. The present study was carried out to determine the characteristics of a good teacher from the viewpoint of students of Sanandaj University of Applied Sciences. Materials and Methods: The present research was a cross-sectional study. Samples were all of students of Sanandaj University of Applied Sciences who had passed at least two semesters and were enrolled in the second semester of the academic year of 2013. Of those, 384 students were randomly selected. The data gathering tool was a questionnaire consisting of two parts: demographic questions and questions related to the characteristics of a good teacher. For data analysis spss version 16 was used. Results: From the viewpoint of the students, mastery of the subject matter taught by the teacher, general knowledge about teaching of the lesson, trying to understand the lesson and answering students' questions and teaching experience of the teacher were most important. The least important characteristics of a good educator were paying attention to the students, holding quizzes and midterm exam, academic rank, compliance with educational regulations and dropping the students who exceed absent-from-class limit. There was no statistically significant relationship between sex, course of study and the six areas of the characteristics of a good teacher (P>0.05). Conclusion: The results of the present study show that in the selection of the teachers, high academic abilities, familiarity with the methods of communication, and appropriate ways of dealing with students should be given greater weight.
