Background & Objective: Effective health communication is a critical competency for healthcare professionals, and appropriate education is necessary to guarantee its quality in contextually sensitive communication settings. This article reports on the first cycle of a Design-Based Research (DBR) study that elicits a conceptual framework to design and develop a pedagogical intervention for medical students to practice communication skills in complex situations involving medical errors.
Materials & Methods: A preliminary literature review identified current trends in health communication and education using a pragmatic, scoping approach across key databases and technical resources. Following these trends, a scoping review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) protocol pinpointed recent methods for patient-centered communication education. This review was done by following a structured search strategy across PubMed and Scopus. From an initial pool of 218 records, 15 studies that met the criteria were analyzed. Finally, using a thematically synthesized approach, a conceptual framework for a learning environment was developed.
Results: The findings indicated that in health communication, emerging trends include the rise of digital and patient-centered communication and a renewed focus on culturally sensitive situations and empathy. Education, on the other hand, evolves from knowledge-centered approaches to competency-based learning, simulated and virtual environments, culminating in a humanistic-technological fusion that defines a new, future-oriented paradigm in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) and humanism converge in modern education based on patient-centered communication.
Conclusion: The result of this research integrates educational pathways, human principles, and instructional design principles in a holistic perspective to achieve patient-centered communication education. As an outline of this integration, the research indicates that technology's most valuable contribution to patient-centered education is enabling context-based scenarios that foster comprehensive patient-physician dialogue, taking into account the patient's emotional culture and priorities. Accordingly, for the next step in DBR - design and implementation- gamified scenario-based learning environments were chosen to provide authentic, real-world narratives grounded in real data, patient characteristics, and complex situations. AI-enriched situations were also selected to generate diverse, realistic scenarios.
